Thursday 12 May

International Association of Literary Journalism Studies Conference

Wow!! What an amazing, intellectually stimulating day! Fifteen presentations, including my own, on a wide array of topics related to literary journalism.

The conference, hosted this year by the Universite Libre De Bruxelles, consists of 60 delegates from 20 different countries, and runs over three days.

My favourite papers from today included "From undercover reporting to mockumentaries: The documentary value of performative immersion" by Christophe Den Tant, "Muslin Gonzo: Michael Muhammad Knight's journey to discover America's Punk Rock Islam" by Brian Bowe and a panel discussion titled "But will they read it? Students' problematic engagement with literary journalism" - which proves that even the First World is having trouble getting its students to read!

My paper, titled "Contesting genres/Contesting selves: Interrogating South African journalists' creative non-fiction", seemed to be well received and generated some interesting discussion. It's a relief though to have the presentation behind me!
